Mister Hurne;

The Aircraft Maintenance Guys ( Bot Rotary And Fixed Wing ) Are The True Un-Sung Heroes Of The First Air Cav In Southeast Asia.

From Our Arrival In 1965, Those Men " Dug Stumps "By Day, And During The Night-Time Hours, Besides Pulling " Green-Line " Duty*, Could Be Seen Hard At Work, Re-Assembling Our Aircraft That Came Over On The Ships.
( * There Was A Guy From The 15TH TC By The Name of John Cowan Who Was KIA On The Green Line By A Short Round Fired By Div Arty In 1965 )

My First Aircraft Was A UH1-D And On Our Second Mission, We Took Several Rounds ( Our Co-Pilot Was Wounded ) The Battery ( Then Located Aft Right Side )
Was Hit And Exploded, One Of The Main Electrical Harnesses ( Overhead ) Was Severed, Some Instruments Were Damaged ( Sparks And Smoke ) Two Holes In The Left Windscreen, And 19 Counted In The Tail Boom Area...

Four Mornings Later, We Were Operational Again !
Maintenance Actually Replaced The Tail Boom, Repaired The Battery Rack And Replaced The Battery As Well As Re-Installed And Spliced-In A New Harness And Replaced The Left Windscreen And Three Instruments.
I Had Been Slightly Wounded, So I Did Not Participate Or Oversee These Functions ( Two Days Bed Rest )

In Addition, The Log Book Indicated That A Functional Check Flight ( Maintenance ) Had Been Conducted Before The Aircraft Was Returned To Our Unit!

Some Our Door Gunners Came From Aircraft Maintenance Units, Some After Extending Their Tours, And They Were Always Excellent Aircrew.

Welcome Home And My Best Wishes to You And Yours.
Thanking You For Your Service With The First Air Cav.

The US ARMY tried to make a helicopter mechanic out of me but I did various jobs. I loved flying and helicopters are the greatest.

"To those who have fought for it, Life has a flavor that the protected will never know!"

Between mortars, rockets, RPGs, booby traps and bullets, there was no safe place in for a soldier in Vietnam.
Remember your Christmas in the Nam? Mine was spent on an ambush patrol near the Cambodian border.

I was honored to serve. Leaving Korea and coming to the 1st Calvary Division was something that I have always cherished. I still say "Can Do!" when I am asked to perform a task.

Nice read on unit history. Avengers arrived in Saudi around October. They arrived by boat in Dammam and we moved (30yo ballpark) 60mi nw where we stayed until the drive to KKMC in December. Nice including that crazy rainstorm departure from KKMC, lol. Thanks again for the good read on unit history.
