Unit Various With First Air Cav

When and where did you serve with the 1st CAV? An Khe And Various LZs 1965-1967

City, State or Country that you live in now? Bear Valley Springs, California

Comments:

Mister Kekona,

Sort Of Sad To Know That By The Late Sixties, The First Air Cav Had Been " Dispersed " All Over Vietnam, Spread From Hue / Phu Bai To The Delta.

I See That Your Unit ( B / 229th AHB ) Was In Bear Cat-Way Down South ( Once Home To The 9th Inf Division )

In 1965-66 We Were All Together In The Central Highlands ( Though At Various Locations ) With Our Base Camp At An Khe ( Camp Radcliff )
The Flight Lines Were Always A Hive Of Activity.

You Served With A Unit Of Distinction - The 229th.
It Was Mostly A And B Companies That Provided The Lift To LZ XRAY ( And Columbus, Etc ) In What Was To Become The Battle Of The Ia Drang In November 1965.

One Of The First KIAs Was A Crew Chief From The 229th Who Was Shot Through The Neck As He Sat In The Gun-Well...

A Job Well Done - No Matter Where In-Country.

If You Didn't Get A "WELCOME HOME " You Have One Now.

Thank You For Your Service With The First Air Cav.

All The Best To You And Yours....

Serve with some great guys in Vietnam. I've come in contact with a few over the past several years. Tough times in Nam, but a bonding of men who were serving their country.

My dad, Harold K. Driftmier served in the First Cavalry Division in WWII and was part of the Flying Column. He was from Glendale, CA and was active in the association. I went to reunions with him and my mom . He was a 90 day OCS grad at Ft. Benning, GA. I followed him and was also an OCS grad in 1969. Infantry for us both. My combat time was in Vietnam as an advisor to Vietnamese units. Dad died in 1990. I am proud of my dad being a Trooper!

City, State or Country that you live in now? Creston, IA

Comments:
After arriving at HHC 8th Eng. hq, was appointed as the company clerk, replacing the previous clerk who had been wounded and was heading home. Served as the company clerk for the 14 months in country. Would be interested in hearing from anyone who was with this unit during this time period. Would also be interested in receiving a copy of one of the company/unit monthly rosters, if still available. Welcome home to all my 'Nam brothers.
